If boarding a plane makes you nervous, you are not alone. At least one out of every six adults suffers from some form of aerophobia (a fear of flying).  We reviewed advice from experts and compiled five tips to ease your traveling fears.

Tip#1 - Arm yourself with the facts.  Flying is safe. The odds are 11 million to one that you’ll ever experience a plane crash. In fact, according to the New York Times, flying on a commercial jetliner has never been safer. In the last five years, the safety risk to passengers in the United States has been one in 45 million flights. Statistically, you’re more likely to get in an accident driving to the airport than during air travel!

Tip#2 - Familiarize yourself with the sounds and bumps of the plane during air travel. Knowledge really is power. Knowing that landing gear makes noise, turbulence is common and air pockets can cause a shift in flight will hopefully keep you from panicking. These are all normal occurrences. Lowfares.com provides explanations for common airplane noises to put your mind at ease.

Tip#3 - Bring distractions. Headphones are a must-bring item to keep you distracted. Listening to your favorite CD, movie or audio book can easily take your mind off the sounds and movements of the airplane.

Tip#4 - Inform the flight attendant.  Your flight attendant more than likely has experience with and advice on managing flight anxiety. When boarding the plane, share your concerns and explain that you are nervous. Knowing you have support, if needed, on the flight can help ease your anxiety.

Tip#5 - Try relaxation techniques.  If you begin to experience anxiety, remember to relax your posture and try holding your breath and taking a long breath out. Taking deep breathes can trigger a calming response and help prevent hyperventilation. For more tips take a look at these breathing exercises from TIME Magazine.
